How to get rid of fleas on kittens? Flea control for kittens younger than eight weeks can be challenging, since it’s not recommended to use a cat flea collar, cat flea shampoo, or spot-on flea control products on very young animals. Be that as it may, fleas on kittens are an unmistakable problem, and need to be controlled.

Fleas cause serious health issues for Kittens

A kitten can have hundreds of fleas, which can cause severe itching and skin irritation, resulting in anemia from blood loss. Check the kitten’s gums. If they are pale, this is an indication of anemia, and at this point it’s critical that you get rid of fleas on the kitten right away.

Fleas carry tapeworms, and if a kitten swallows an infected flea, she’ll become infected. A kitten with fleas needs to be treated for tapeworms as well as other parasites.

Super Fleas

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The fleas are out in full force this season in Portland. And these fleas appear resistant to the medication that normally takes care of the problem.

“There are people who are doing everything by the book,” said Veterinarian Steve Haley. “We’re just not seeing the results that honestly at one time we had.”

Bob Cushman and his son Jacob spent part of their night at Pets on Broadway, looking to cure the flea problem that has overtaken their retriever Luka.

“It was a bit of a surprise,” Cushman told KOIN 6 News Wednesday.

Pet owners said the fleas are resistant to tried-and-true products, such as Frontline, that have worked in the past. As of Wednesday night, the makers of Frontline have yet to respond to KOIN 6 News’ inquiry on the apparent resistance of fleas to its product.

Veterinarian Haley said part of the problem is a mild winter, which allowed the fleas and their larvae to survive — and thrive. Though there’s no hard evidence, Haley said this year’s fleas also may have developed tolerances to traditional medications.

“And that is a valid concern,” he said. “It’s a common discussion.”

So what’s a pet owner to do?

There are plenty of products on the market, other than Frontline, that promise to get rid of fleas.

“We’re having to combine products,” said Bethany Andrews at Townhouse Pet Care. “We’re using something called Capstar sometimes, a pill that gets rid of the fleas.”

Andrews said flea baths sometimes can be more effective than topical medications. And she said making sure your home, your linens and your yard are free of fleas can keep the pests from making a return.

“That seems to be the main way that has worked — if they’re treating the environment at the same time they’re treating the animal,” Andrews said.

Natural products such as diatomaceous earth can be spread around the home. Foggers or sprays do much the same thing, helping Portlander’s deal with what’s turning out to be a rough flea season.
